Wellbeing, brought home.

Hekla began with a simple belief: the restorative ritual of sauna belongs in everyday life, not just on holiday. For centuries the Nordic sauna has been a place to slow down, sweat and feel better.

So Hekla builds saunas for the home: beautifully finished, easy to live with, and made for a ritual you come back to day after day. Traditional, infrared, barrel, cube and cabin, for indoors or out.

About Hekla

Five shapes. Pick the one that fits.

Two for indoors, three for the backyard. Tap a shape to see it and its models.

  1. The original Finnish sauna, made for the home.

An electric heater and a bed of stones heat the air to 158 to 194°F, with a rush of löyly steam on demand. Handcrafted in knot-free thermo-aspen for indoor rooms, from two people to six.

  2. The gentle, modern sauna.

Infrared warms your body directly at a calmer 113 to 140°F, so sessions feel breathable and last longer. Quick to heat, economical to run and sized for one or two in a spare room.

  3. The design-led backyard sauna.

Framed in glass beneath a sculptural cube roofline, with a full glass front that opens the sauna to the view. Four sizes, from the Mini Cube for two to the Cube 250 for six.

  4. The timeless outdoor sauna.

Thermo-spruce staves heat quickly and spread warmth evenly, with a half-panoramic window onto the yard. The Barrel 210 suits four, and the Barrel 250 seats six.

  5. The modern backyard sauna.

A weatherproof black shell, a full glass front and a warm thermo-aspen interior. The Mini Cabin seats two and the Cabin seats four, with built-in Bluetooth speakers and LED mood lighting.

Built in the details.

Hekla's own films of the timber, the glass and the light you will find in their saunas.

  • Nordic timber

Hekla builds from Nordic wood, thermally modified for stability, moisture resistance and a soft, splinter-free finish.

  • Double-glazed glass front

Full-height toughened glass, double-glazed to keep the heat in and the weather out.

  • Ambient LED lighting

Dimmable warm LED strip lighting for a soft, restful glow.

Baked, not treated.

Thermo-aspen is natural aspen heated to roughly 356 to 419°F in an oxygen-free kiln, using nothing but heat and steam. No chemicals. No preservatives. It comes out stronger, far more stable and a deep caramel brown right through, ready for a room that heats up and cools down thousands of times.

419°F
Peak kiln temperature. The chamber is oxygen-free, so the wood changes rather than burns.
Zero
Chemicals or preservatives used. Modified with heat and steam alone.
100%
Of the board's thickness carries the caramel color, so it cannot wear away.
  • It holds its shape. Thermo-aspen absorbs far less moisture than untreated wood, so it resists the warping, twisting and cracking that heat cycles cause.
  • Kind to sit against. Aspen stays comfortable against bare skin at full heat, which is why Hekla uses it for benches, backrests and wall panels.
  • Resin-free and knot-free. No sticky sap, no resin smell and a smooth, splinter-resistant surface. No oiling or sealing needed.
What is thermo-aspen?

Traditional or infrared?

Same benefits, different heat. The easiest way to choose is to sit in both.

Traditional: the classic ritual

158 to 194°F 70 to 90°C

Heats the air for a hotter, more intense session, with bursts of löyly steam when you pour water over the stones. Shorter rounds of 10 to 20 minutes, repeated with cool-downs.

Infrared: calm, everyday heat

113 to 140°F 45 to 60°C

Warms you directly at a gentler temperature over longer sessions. Quick to heat up and economical to run. Gentle enough to read in.

Good for the mind and body.

A sauna offers warmth, quiet and a repeatable pause in the day. In long-term studies of middle-aged Finnish men, more frequent traditional sauna bathing was associated with lower rates of some cardiovascular and cognitive outcomes. Those studies do not prove a cause or test Hekla products or infrared saunas.

A workout for your blood vessels

Sauna heat raises heart rate and increases blood flow for a time. Research on frequent traditional sauna bathing has found associations with cardiovascular outcomes, but it cannot show what a home sauna will do for an individual.

Muscles, movement and training

A warm session can feel soothing after activity and provide a quiet transition out of a busy day. Choose a comfortable temperature and duration for your routine.

Switching off, sleeping better

An evening sauna can become a simple cue to slow down. Keep the routine comfortable and leave enough time to cool down before bed.

Sources: Age and Ageing (2017) and JAMA Internal Medicine (2015). These observational studies followed middle-aged Finnish men using traditional saunas. They do not establish that sauna use caused the differences or predict outcomes for this product. Ask a health professional about a new heat routine when appropriate.

Made to stand outside, all year.

Hekla's cube, barrel and cabin saunas have weather-ready shells, double-glazed glass and a warm thermo-aspen interior. Run them on a Harvia electric heater, or a wood-burning stove on the larger cubes and barrels.

Hekla questions.

Clear answers for planning the product, site and delivery.

Hekla lines its saunas in thermo-aspen: aspen baked with heat and steam alone, no chemicals. It stays stable, resin-free and comfortable against bare skin. The barrel saunas are built from thermally modified spruce staves.
