The quick answer

A home sauna creates a dedicated space for heat and relaxation. Research on cardiovascular benefits is promising, but sauna use is not a treatment or a substitute for exercise. Consider heat tolerance, medical advice where needed and the routine you can sustain.

Separate an enjoyable ritual from a health promise.

A sauna can make a quiet break easier to keep: a place to step away from devices, slow down and enjoy warmth. Those are personal reasons to buy, and they do not require a sweeping health claim. A good purchase fits your available time, heat preferences and home.

Harvard Health describes promising research on sauna use and heart health, while explaining limits in the evidence. Studies observing regular users do not prove that buying a sauna produces the same outcome. Southern Leisure’s role is to help choose and plan the equipment; health advice belongs with your clinician.

Choose the kind of heat you enjoy.

Traditional saunas use a heater and stones to heat the room. Infrared saunas use emitters, creating a different heat experience. Some models combine systems. Compare the manufacturer’s instructions, electrical needs, heat-up expectations and bench layout for the specific sauna rather than choosing from a general promise about the technology.

Seat height, back support, light and the view out of the room can change whether you look forward to using it. See a comparable interior when possible. Take the dimensions of the room and the people who will share the sauna into the conversation.

Start with comfort, hydration and the instructions.

Follow the manufacturer’s use guidance and avoid making a more intense session your goal. Stop if you feel unwell. People with medical concerns, including heart conditions, or who take medicines that affect heat tolerance should ask a clinician whether sauna use is appropriate. Avoid alcohol around sauna sessions.

A sauna’s appeal can be its simplicity. Put towels and a drinking-water option nearby, plan a comfortable place to cool down, and choose a location you can reach easily in daily life. You do not need to add a cold plunge to benefit from a quieter routine.

Plan the room before choosing the heater.

Indoor and outdoor units have different placement needs. Ventilation, power, flooring, moisture management and the manufacturer’s clearances all deserve attention. Do not assume an indoor model can be used outdoors because you intend to put it under a roof.

Southern Leisure carries Finnleo and Hekla saunas. Bring photographs, dimensions and your preferred heat style to a showroom conversation. The team can help you compare models and identify the requirements to take to your installer.

Your questions, answered.

Are sauna health benefits guaranteed?

No. Research is promising but does not guarantee an individual health outcome. A sauna is not a substitute for medical treatment or exercise.

Which is better, traditional or infrared?

The better fit depends on the heat experience you prefer, the available space, power requirements and manufacturer instructions for the model.

Can I install an indoor sauna outside?

Use a model explicitly designed for the intended setting and follow its installation requirements. An indoor designation should not be treated as weatherproof.
